Hong Kong to Hold a Drone Show Over Victoria Harbour on May 1 https://thehkhub.com/hong-kong-to-hold-a-drone-show-over-victoria-harbour-on-may-1/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 23:50:17 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67403 Hong Kong will celebrate Labour Day, Tin Hau Festival, Tam Kung Festival and Cheung Chau Bun Festival in one go with a special drone show over Victoria Harbour on 1 May. The event, which will take place at the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade, will bring the city’s cultural stories to life with lights, music and festive scenes, creating a colourful atmosphere along the waterfront.

Visitors can expect a twelve-minute performance featuring hundreds of drones creating shapes and patterns linked to the traditional Chinese festivals celebrated in Hong Kong. Last year’s displays included famous scenes like the towering bun structures of Cheung Chau, and this year promises even more unique effects and melodies.

On top of the drone show organised over Victoria Harbour, another drone show will take place on 1 May at Gold Coast Piazza in Tuen Mun. Part of the Gold Coast Hydrangea Festival, this event will feature a 1,288-drone performance set against a backdrop of flower-themed celebrations. Visitors can enjoy immersive installations and a lively pop-up market, with many stalls supporting local creators and charities during the five-day festival.

Drone shows have become a key attraction for Hong Kong last years as several were organised to promote tourism and mark special occasions, including a popular Doraemon-themed show.

However, in March, the Hong Kong Tourism Board announced that from 2025, regular pyrotechnic and drone displays would be scaled back. Instead, the focus will shift towards rejuvenating harbourfront spaces and hosting more large-scale events across the city.

Waterbomb Festival To Return This Year in Hong Kong https://thehkhub.com/waterbomb-festival-to-return-this-year-in-hong-kong/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 08:59:25 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67347 Waterbomb, South Korea’s unique music and water festival, is set to return to Hong Kong in 2025 but no official date has been communicated so far. Last year was the first time the event took place in the 852, gathering thousands of fans for a weekend of K-pop performances and water-based activities.

The organisers have confirmed the festival will be back in a post on Instagram, although details such as the exact dates, location, and performer line-up have not yet been announced.

Waterbomb stands out from other festivals with its strong visual style and interactive format. Alongside live music, the event includes large-scale water fights where the crowd and artists are divided into colored teams. Attendees are encouraged to take part using powerful water guns, turning the festival into a playful, full-body experience. The festival features three main elements.

  • The music and performance with unique visuals, K-pop bands, hip-hop acts, and high-energy sets from Korean DJs.
  • The water battles where festival-goers become part of the action in a light-hearted team competition.
  • And the Waterbomb Time, their signature part of the event filled with water cannons, huge splash moments and group energy, designed to create a sense of thrill and shared joy.

In 2024, artists like Jay Park, Jessi, Rain, Yugyeom or tripleS performed at the debut Hong Kong edition. While the event faced some delays due to typhoon weather and long entrance queues, many enjoyed its atmosphere and unique format.

Despite major events in Hong Kong during the first quarter of 2024, such as the Rugby Sevens and the long-awaited Coldplay concerts, the music festival scene has faced some challenges. Creamfields has been cancelled, and Shi Fu Miz is currently crowdfunding in hopes of returning. Clockenflap is still scheduled for December in Central. Further details about Waterbomb Hong Kong 2025 will be announced in the coming weeks.

To know the latest announcements, follow @waterbomb_hongkong_official on Instagram or visit www.waterbombhongkong.com. If you’re looking for more fun things to do, read our guide to the best concerts and music festival in Hong Kong.

The free-to-attend showcases of Thai culture include busking performances, a traditional costume experience, and a cabaret show at the basketball court of Carpenter Road Park.

Registrants can use their own water guns as long as they don’t exceed a two-litre capacity and plastic basins that measure less than 30 centimeters in diameter. All water-splashing equipment can only be filled with clean water from the event.

Art Basel Hong Kong Brings 18 Large-Scale Installations to the City https://thehkhub.com/art-basel-hong-kong-brings-18-large-scale-installations-to-the-city/ Thu, 06 Mar 2025 06:19:50 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67053 One of the biggest events on Hong Kong’s cultural calendar, Art Basel, is set to take over the city at the end of March, bringing with it an exciting lineup of contemporary art. This year’s edition will see the return of Encounters — the show sector dedicated to large-scale exhibits — with 18 monumental artworks from a diverse group of international artists. The 2025 edition, called ‘As the World Turns’ will include 14 works created specifically for Art Basel Hong Kong put together by Alexie Glass-Kantor in her last year as the fair’s curator.

Offsite Encounters Installations at Pacific Place

As in previous years, Pacific Place will house the offsite Encounters displays during Art Basel. One of the highlights is Laurent Perbos’ Beauty and Gesture, which is making its Hong Kong debut at Starstreet Precinct. Originally showcased at the French National Assembly during the 2024 Paris Olympics, the installation features reinterpretations of the Venus de Milo, each holding a different piece of sports equipment to symbolise Olympic events.

Also at Starstreet Precinct is Lanternfly Ballet by Monster Chetwynd, which features three large-scale lanternfly sculptures resting on lily pads inspired by the artist’s collages. These insects, native to Hong Kong’s woodlands, represent transformation and adaptability. At scheduled times, dancers will perform a specially choreographed routine that mimics the evolving nature of the lanternflies.

A Closer Look at Encounters’ Four Themes

The rest of the Encounters works will be on view at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The section is structured around four thematic platforms: Passage, which explores cultural resilience and storytelling; Alteration, focusing on abstraction and materiality; Charge, investigating digital and physical intersections; and The Return, which delves into mythology and cycles of existence. Several artworks will be showcased under Passage, including three monumental paintings by Pacita Abad, the late Filipino-American artist known for her vibrant exploration of iconographies from the Global South.

In Alteration, Hong Kong-born artist Christopher K. Ho presents a suite of 30 brass sculptures, incorporating Modernist visual elements to create a playful yet thought-provoking installation. Lu Yang’s pop-up store at The Charge section will sell artworks created by digital avatar DOKU, while Vajiko Chachkhiani’s latest work at The Return reflects on migration and displacement, examining the recurring “them and us” dynamics in history.

‘Cirque du Soleil’ Returns to Hong Kong After 7 Years https://thehkhub.com/cirque-du-soleil-returns-to-hong-kong-after-7-years/ Fri, 28 Feb 2025 05:11:31 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=66501 The world-renowned Cirque du Soleil is bringing its Kooza show back to Hong Kong this year as part of its 2025 Asia tour. The circus production will stage 15 performances at The Big Top at Central Harbourfront from May 21-June 1, 2025.

This is the first time that Cirque du Soleil Kooza will be in the city since 2018, and Hong Kong audiences will get to see a revamped version of the presentation — complete with new artists and production elements

What is ‘Cirque du Soleil Kooza’?

Cirque du Soleil Kooza tells the story of The Innocent, a loner who embarks on a journey and meets a cast of colourful characters — such as the King, the Trickster, and the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog — along the way. The production is a showcase of two circus traditions: acrobatic performance and the art of clowning presented by specialists who display a wide array of skills. Kooza was relaunched in 2022, so spectators this year will get to see and interact with new artists.

Teeterboard artists will show off their skills at the circus event.

The forthcoming Hong Kong showings of Cirque du Soleil Kooza will be the first in a series of Asia events that the production has lined up for 2025. There will be 38 shows staged over 24 days — from May 21-June 22, 2025 — each of which will be about 125-minutes long, with a 25-minute intermission. Audiences can watch the performances at The Big Top, which is also where The World Circus takes place during the AIA Carnival. Initially, the organisers announced only 15 shows un June 1, but extended Kooza’s run in Hong Kong until June 22.

What to expect from the performers?

The entertainers at the Hong Kong shows come from 54 countries across the world, which includes six musicians and two singers. Spectators can watch a rotation acts specialist, a contortionist, unicycle duo, teeterboard artists, and high-wire performers flaunt their skills to live music and singing.

Audiences can also get a front-row seat to an enthralling performance in which an entertainer balances on a 23-feet-high tower of chairs. The highlight The Wheel of Death — a large high-speed rotating powered by two performers who run hamster-style inside two diagonal wheels.

The set and the costumes of Cirque du Soleil Kooza are characters in their own right. In all, there are more than 175 costumes and 160 hats, and the circular stage reminiscent of a public square transforms into a circus ring. The centrepiece of the stage is a travelling tower called the Bataclan, which changes the layout of the performance space as it moves.
