Hong Kong draws crowds with major events

The “Music of the Spheres” world tour has sparked huge excitement among fans in Hong Kong. Tickets sold out quickly, with many fans frustrated they couldn’t secure tickets despite trying several times. This high demand shows Coldplay’s enduring popularity and how much people are looking forward to their shows.

The Coldplay pop-up store and concerts come right after a series of major events in March, including the Rugby Sevens, Art Basel, and Art Central, all of which drew large crowds and international visitors to the city. Hong Kong has been buzzing with activity lately, with even more attention drawn by the recent 10-hour live stream from IShowSpeed, which attracted massive crowds across the city.

The store will be open from 11 AM to 9 PM, April 6 to 27, at G015, G/F, Airside.

Tenuta Viglione Brings Puglia’s Wine Tradition to Asia’s Growing Market https://thehkhub.com/tenuta-viglione-brings-puglias-wine-tradition-to-asias-growing-market/ Tue, 25 Mar 2025 00:45:26 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67204 Once known mainly for its olive oil and food culture, Puglia is now making a name for itself in the global wine scene. The region’s wines, particularly red varieties, are being added to more wine lists across Asia, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences towards authenticity and heritage.

While Puglia has a long winemaking history dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, it was often overlooked for much of the 20th century. Many of its wines were produced in high volumes with a focus on quantity rather than character. This started to change in the 1980s when a group of producers began working with native grape varieties and promoting organic farming and artisanal techniques.

One example is Tenuta Viglione, a family-owned winery based in the Gioia del Colle PDO. It is part of a growing number of estates focused on small-batch, organic production, helping to highlight the region’s potential in international markets.

Tenuta Viglione Brings Puglia’s Wine Tradition to Asia’s Growing Market

Puglia’s most recognisable grapes are Primitivo and Negroamaro, both known for bold reds. But the region also offers lesser-known varieties like Nero di Troia and Susumaniello, as well as white and rosé wines. Verdeca, a native white grape, is gaining attention for its fresh acidity, which pairs well with seafood. Meanwhile, Puglia’s rosés are being praised for their elegance and crispness.

In markets like Hong Kong, where wine drinkers are becoming more adventurous, these unique offerings are seen as a welcome change. The rising interest also mirrors a wider trend across Asia: a desire for wines with a clear identity, rooted in tradition but open to modern taste.

As more importers and sommeliers turn to regions like Puglia for new inspiration, the region’s wines are finding their place on shelves and menus across Asia. It marks a step forward not only for Puglia, but for the broader recognition of Southern Italy’s wine potential.

For more information and stockist details, visit Tenuta Viglione’s official website.

China’s Largest Retailer JD Mall Set To Open in Hong Kong https://thehkhub.com/chinas-largest-retailer-jd-mall-set-to-open-in-hong-kong/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 07:18:05 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67117 Hong Kong will welcome another Mainland Chinese e-commerce giant to its retail landscape when JD.com opens its first physical store in the city. According to reports, the SAR’s first JD Mall will be an experience centre that will stock home appliances. However, there is no word yet on where in Hong Kong the shopping hub will be and when it will open its doors to the public.

What is JD.com?

JD.com, which was founded in 1998 as Jingdong, is Mainland China’s largest retailer by revenue. The Beijing-based E-commer operator started out as an online magneto-optical store, and later expanded its offerings to include electronics, mobile phones, and computers, among other tech essentials. The company changed its name to JD.com in 2013, and opened the first JD Mall in Xi’an in 2021 — a sprawling 42,000 square metre space that sells everything from home appliances and digital accessories to furniture and children’s products.

According to media reports, the e-commerce powerhouse began hiring talent from Hong Kong’s electronics retail industry in 2024 as it prepared for its new venture in the territory. Reports also indicate that JD Property, a subsidiary of JD, acquired the Li Fung Centre in Sha Tin last year and that related firms had established a presence in Jardine House in Central.

Other Mainland E-commerce Offerings in Hong Kong

While JD.com has a Hong Kong-specific website that can be translated into English, the app is only available in Chinese. However, its rival Taobao launched an English-language interface for Hong Kong earlier this year on which users can view product descriptions, special offers, and local currency conversions in English. Additionally, Taobao recently opened its first experience centre in Hong Kong, in collaboration with local home improvement company Papabo. The store combines physical and digital retail by allowing customers to check out a curated selection of Taobao furniture and lifestyle homeware products in person before they place orders online.

Taobao’s First Furniture Store to Officially Open in Tsim Sha Tsui on February 22 https://thehkhub.com/taobaos-first-furniture-store-in-hong-kong-to-open-in-tsim-sha-tsui-on-february-22/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 08:10:31 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=66764 Hongkongers who’ve been wanting to get a real feel of what Taobao furniture actually looks and feels like before they place an order will soon be able to do just that. The Mainland online shopping platform is partnering with Hong Kong-based Papabo to open a Taobao experience centre in Tsim Sha Tsui at the end of this month called PapaHome Partnered with Taobao. Customers will get the chance to check out furniture and lifestyle homeware offerings in person — something they are currently not able to do with the online-only service.

Taobao Hong Kong store details

It was previously reported that Taobao was set to open its maiden Hong Kong retail centre in early 2025 in the bustling Tsim Sha Tsui area. Now, it’s confirmed that a 25,000 square feet furniture and lifestyle homewares super store will open on the second floor China Hong Kong City — a commercial complex in TST — on February 22 this year. The new outlet will launch in collaboration with Papabo, a Hong Kong-headquarted home repair, maintenance, and renovation platform.

The Hong Kong Taobao store will combine physical and digital retail with an Online-Merge-Offline model. This will allow shoppers to get a feel of the products and scan QR codes to get detailed product information and exclusive discounts online before making their final purchase on Taobao. They will also get access to AI and AR shopping tools for a more personalised shopping experience. Store assistants will be available to answer any questions buyers may have before they place their orders.

Customers can take their pick of more than 10,000 products from more than 100 Taobao merchants selling everything from living and dining room essentials to whole house custom furniture and interior décor — all handpicked specifically for Hong Kong. Sellers include customised kitchen cabinets specialists GoldenHome Living, ceramic tiles provider Guangdong Dongpeng Holdings, creative furniture brand Mona Lisa Group, and Nordic and Japanese furniture merchant SHUZHI Design.

Other Taobao options in Hong Kong

So far, Hong Kong Taobao users have only been able to access products online via the website or app — both of which were only in Chinese until recently. Then Taobao launched an English-language interface for Hong Kong, which allowed users in the city to view product descriptions, special offers, and local currency conversions in English. However, this version doesn’t give customers access to its entire product range. Hong Kong-based shoppers can also get free shipping for orders above ¥99 (about HK$105).

OMG: Taobao is Now Available in English in Hong Kong! https://thehkhub.com/omg-taobao-is-now-available-in-english-in-hong-kong/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 07:53:24 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=66456 Taobao, the Mainland Chinese e-commerce giant, has launched an interface for English-speaking users of its app in Hong Kong. The move, which comes just before Chinese New Year, will allow customers to read product descriptions, find out about discounts, and get local currency conversions in English — features that were earlier only accessible to users proficient in Chinese. It now takes only a few taps to switch to the English interface.

How to get Taobao in English in Hong Kong

Until recently, the only way to shop on Taobao in English was by using tools like Google Translate on the platform’s website or app. Now, non-Chinese speakers who want to use Taobao in English first need to download the app, create an account, open the homepage, and follow these five steps:

  1. Select the ‘我的淘宝’ (My Taobao) icon on the bottom right of the screen
  2. Tap on the gearbox icon (‘设置’/Settings) on the top right of the ‘我的淘宝’ page
  3. Select ‘国家/地区、语言、货币’ (Country, language, currency), which is the fifth option from the top
  4. Tap on ‘语言’ (language), which is the second option from the top
  5. Select ‘English’ and confirm

Once this is done, users should be able to scroll through products in a variety of categories in English, use the photo or screenshot search option, and view account settings in English. However, customers who previously used the Chinese-only version of the app may now find that some saved products may not be available in the English version.

Other Taobao English versions

Last year, Taobao launched an English interface for Singapore users that has a vast selection of categories that are reported to be similar to the platform’s offerings in Mainland China. This came after they opened a physical store at the Lion City’s Funan Mall in 2019 along with an authorised local partner.

Taobao launched their official Hong Kong website in 2013 and, nearly 10 years later, introduced a Hong Kong Furniture Channel to give SAR-based customers the option of personalising furniture and getting large-size purchases installed. Last year, they started free shipping to the city for orders over ¥99 and purchased a 40,000 square feet space in Tsim Sha Tsui to open the first Taobao store in Hong Kong.

Sai Kung’s First Mega Shopping Mall to Open in January https://thehkhub.com/sai-kungs-first-mega-shopping-mall-to-open-in-january/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 06:09:50 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=66348 Sai Kung will soon get its first mall when Dock 1A opens its doors in January 2025. The new retail space on Chui Tong Road will span 34,000 square feet across 10 storeys, and have a wide range of shops, dining, and entertainment facilities for visitors. Dock 1A is within walking distance of landmarks like the Sai Kung town centre and the public pier.

Sai Kung’s Largest Mall

Dock 1A is built on the site of the old Centro complex on 1A Chui Tong Road. The new development is spread across 34,000 square feet, is 10 storeys high, and will provide visitors with a variety of shopping and restaurant options. It will also have more than 380 parking spots with charging facilities for electric vehicles.

The mall has not yet confirmed which retail and dining destinations it will house. However, there will be a Fusion supermarket — likely the same one that was at Centro — as there is an offer for visitors who spend over HK$200 there to avail free parking for 1-2 hours, depending on how much their purchases cost.

How to get to Dock 1A

The mall is within easy reach of key Sai Kung locations like the town centre and public pier, where ferries from Fo Tau Fan Chau, Kau Sai Village, and Leung Shuen Wa dock. There are other public transportation options for visitors, such as minibuses from the Hang Hau MTR station, as well as direct minibuses from Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, and Causeway Bay.

Dock 1A is within a 30-minute drive from neighbourhoods like Ma On Shan, Tseung Kwan O, Sha Tin, and Kowloon East. Parking fees are HK$18 per hour from Monday to Friday, and HK$28 per hour on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays

Sai Kung is known as the back garden of the city as it has some of the best beaches in Hong Kong, as well as breathtaking scenery, hiking trails, and fishing villages. The district is also famous for the hexagonal volcanic rock columns at the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, which was declared a geological heritage site in 2022.

Squid Game Pop-Up Opens in Hong Kong For One Month https://thehkhub.com/squid-game-pop-up-opens-in-hong-kong-for-one-month/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 06:47:43 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=66294 Done bingeing the second season of Squid Game? Then relive the excitement by heading to a pop-up store inspired by the iconic Netflix show at Airside mall in Kai Tak. Highlights of the retail experience created in collaboration with street fashion brand Kyubi include a giant Young-Hee doll, Front Man 3D mask, piggy bank installation, and photo op spot. The store is open until February 5, 2025.

What’s at the Squid Game Pop-Up?

The Kyubi X Squid Game 2 pop-up includes characters and objects closely associated with the Netflix hit. Visitors will be greeted by a four-metre-high Young-Hee — the motion-sensing animatronic doll used in the first game of the show. At night, the doll’s eyes will be illuminated and emit laser beams reminiscent of the deadly version seen onscreen.

Once customers enter, they will see a massive replica of the 3D mask worn by the mysterious Front Man, as well as a photo op spot inspired by the staircases from the show under a giant piggy bank that contains bank notes that represent the game participants’ winnings. There’s also a smaller version of Young-Hee that reveals her mechanical insides.

What Merch Can I Buy?

Kyubi is a street fashion brand created by Anson Kong, one of the members of Cantopop boy band Mirror, and takes its name from the Japanese word for a mythical nine-tailed fox. As part of the brand’s collaboration with the Netflix hit, the store has miniature versions of the brand’s characters, Kyu and Kyubi Bear, in manager and soldier outfits alongside other figures in Squid Game-inspired uniforms.

Fans of the show and brand can also check out other merch — think limited-edition hoodies, T-shirts, and a variety of accessories like socks, towels, and purses. Don’t miss the collectible figures of the Kyubi Family with Front Man, Young-Hee, and the pink guards.

A city of convenience indeed, IFC has direct access to the airport via a 25-minute train ride and an in-town check-in service where travellers can check in their luggage just below the mall. Lee Theatre Plaza is targeted at budget shoppers, with brands like UNIQLO, MUJI, and Cotton On. Lee Garden towers One to Six are a mix of premium office towers and designer brand shopping.

Fittingly located on Tsim Sha Tsui dockside nearby the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Hong Kong Cultural Centre, it’s an experimental mixture of retail and cultural experiences, and in the most basic sense, it’s a beautiful shopping centre. The interiors resemble a futuristic art museum with its organic shapes, actual art that sometimes doubles as rest areas, and flourishes of greenery. As a shopping centre, it houses international and up-and-coming local fashion brands, independent coffeehouses and restaurants, and one of Hong Kong’s most popular themed attractions — LEGOLAND Discovery Centre.

Taobao Rumoured to Open First Physical Store in Hong Kong by Early 2025 https://thehkhub.com/taobao-rumoured-to-open-first-physical-store-in-hong-kong-by-early-2025/ Tue, 29 Oct 2024 03:37:37 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=65204
Hong Kong will get its first Taobao store at the end of 2024 at the earliest, in the form of an experience store where visitors can browse the popular Mainland Chinese online shopping platform’s furniture offerings. The space, which will span about 40,000 square feet, will reportedly be on the second floor of the China Hong Kong City in Tsim Sha Tsui.

According to local media reports, the experience store will be on the second floor of the commercial complex, which previously housed an established brand. The space will operate as a pickup point for online Taobao orders, and will be a one-stop shop for furniture-related services such as selection, measuring, design, ordering, and home installation in collaboration with local renovation and design platforms. During the initial launch, Taobao will reportedly use about 20,000 square feet of its Hong Kong space and the remaining floor area next year.

Taobao opened its first physical store at Funan Mall in Singapore in 2019 (© Virmall via Instagram)

Taobao has been making significant inroads into Hong Kong over the past few years, with the introduction of a “Hong Kong Furniture Channel” in 2022, which provides customers the option of customising furniture and requesting installation for large-size purchases. More recently, Taobao announced free shipping to Hong Kong for orders over ¥99, starting October 1, 2024.

This isn’t the first time that Taobao will open a brick-and-mortar outlet — they launched their debut physical store in Singapore in 2019 in Funan Mall, along with authorised local partner Virmall. And while the online platform does not have an English interface in Hong Kong — unlike the one recently launched in Singapore — there are ways to shop on Taobao in English from Hong Kong.

Plus size stores

Believe it or not, there are a couple of dedicated plus size clothing stores across Hong Kong that cater specifically to bigger bodies. Created by fellow disgruntled individuals who decided to take their fashion crises into their own hands, they are a great option.

Thrift/secondhand plus size clothing

We cannot ignore the environmental impact of fast fashion, and fashion in general. But unfortunately, there aren’t that many sustainable brands making great plus size clothing (except for the couple we’ve included below!). So personally, I like to shop secondhand.

Hong Kong Curvy Swap and Sell — Facebook

This group is a wonderful place to swap and sell secondhand fashion for curvy women in Hong Kong. You can often find dresses, tops, skirts and even shoes in brands and sizes that you might otherwise not be able to find! It is truly a supportive community that often shares tips too. Plus, this is a great opportunity for you to pass on your own unused clothes and earn a little bit of pocket money.

Shop: Facebook

Green Ladies/Redress/Carousell — Multiple locations, online

These secondhand platforms for plus size fashion can be a hit or a miss but are worth checking out if you’re open to spending time exploring and hunting. I have over the years gotten some great gems, especially in the Wan Chai Green Ladies and in the Redress pop-ups. These might be a safer bet as you can try and check the clothes in person. On the other hand, Carousell has a huge platform, with over 250 returns coming up for XXL dresses, but it is not always reliable. I once had someone sell me boots with both the heels broken!

International brands with larger sizing

Finally, there are a number of international brands that are the go-to for curvier women in Hong Kong. Marks & Spencer usually offers up to UK size 16 in stores and goes up to 24 online. COS is another favourite. Phase Eight and Hobbs are British brands that have stores in Hong Kong that carry up to XXL or UK size 20. If you have a slightly bigger budget, you can’t go wrong with Diane Von Furstenburg, which carries sizes up to XXL or US size 16.

Hong Kong’s Largest Mall in Island South to Open Fully on June 21 https://thehkhub.com/hong-kongs-largest-mall-in-island-south-to-open-fully-on-june-21/ Mon, 17 Jun 2024 08:29:25 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=63107 Hong Kong’s latest MTR mall, The Southside, will completely open on June 21, after which visitors can check out all its 130 venues. The weekend opening is touted to be a soft launch, after which mall-goers can explore the five-storey 510,000 square feet space, and relax at the 14,000 square feet public rest area.

The Southside opened its first phase in December 2023, but visitors could only access 30 venues on the ground floor, which included McDonald’s, Jumping Gym U.S.A., and Hallmark. Starting this weekend, there will be more than 35 restaurants, such as the popular Vietnamese beef noodle restaurant Brass Spoon, Tokyo ramen house Konjiki Hototogisu, modern Thai establishment Bamboo Thai, and Taiwanese beef noodle shop DuanChunZhen.

the southside hong kong mall interiors
The Southside’s soft launch on June 21 will give shoppers the chance to explore all five storeys of the mall.

The NOC Coffee Co. at The Southside will be the first branch of the coffee shop to have ice cream on its menu. Japanese matcha specialist nana’s green tea will open its second branch here, after making its Hong Kong debut at Airside last year. Caffeine addicts can also head to the new concept store of local coffee brand stain+ that is spread across 1,100 square feet. There will also be a city’super for upscale grocery shopping, Emperor Cinemas Plus for movie-goers, and UNIQLO for casual wear.

The Southside is connected to the Wong Chuk Hang MTR station on the South Island Line, and is an 8-minute ride from the Admiralty MTR station. In addition, the mall has more than 220 parking spaces with electric vehicle charging facilities for visitors who wish to drive there. The architecture of the mall takes inspiration from the sweeping coastline and natural beauty of the southern part of Hong Kong Island.
