Ocean Park To Open New Zone in 2028 with Ziplines, Bungee Jumping & Giant Swings https://thehkhub.com/ocean-park-to-open-new-zone-in-2028-with-ziplines-bungee-jumping-giant-swings/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 01:54:22 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=65164 Hong Kong’s Ocean Park is set to undergo a mega expansion with the opening of its Adventure Zone in 2028. The 120,000 square metres zone will be built on the site of the old Raging River and Mine Train, and will have ziplines, bungee jumping, giant swings, a ropes park, outdoor playgrounds, and water adventure play areas, among other attractions spread out across three areas that visitors can access with separate admission tickets.

The biggest attraction will be the two 1,000-metre-long ziplines at the former Boardwalk Café — one above Water World, while the other will weave in and out of lush green bushland. Both will provide thrill-seekers panoramic views of Aberdeen Harbour and the surrounding waterways. There will also be three long dry slides with sharp curves and steep slopes.

The sea-facing side of Ocean Park next to the Fullteron houses Water World and The Summit.

The iconic dome-shaped rack of the Mine Train will be converted into a scenic walkway and Ropes Park, while the neighbouring Luge — Alpine Coaster will be ground zero for gravity-defying challenges. The old Raging River will be the site of a Twin Bungy and Twin Giant Swing, along with outdoor playgrounds, water adventure play areas, and climbing walls.

The news of the new zone comes after Ocean Park welcomed four new pandas earlier this year — twin cubs born in mid-August, and two five-year-old pandas that arrived from Mainland China in late September. Visitors will be able to see the older pair by the end of the year, and the cubs early 2025.

Yuen Long Lantern Street: Opening Hours, Getting There, Lantern Prices https://thehkhub.com/yuen-long-lantern-street/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 04:07:57 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=64199 For most of the year, Tai Kiu Market in Yuen Long is a regular Hong Kong wet market at which residents in the area can pick up seafood, meat, fruits, vegetables, and household odds and ends. But in the run-up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, a part of the market transforms into what is popularly known as Lantern Street. Find out more about this hotspot, famous among locals and visitors for lanterns and great Instagram clicks!

What is Lantern Street?

Lantern Street is a section of Tai Kiu Market in Yuen Long, a neighbourhood in the northwestern part of Hong Kong’s New Territories. Every year, before the Mid-Autumn Festival, visitors flock to this part of the indoor market to check out the floor-to-ceiling displays of lanterns here, and even buy them for when they go moon-gazing, a practice usually observed on the first day of the festival. There are usually around 1,000 lanterns on sale at the market, and they come in an array of shapes and sizes — from the conventional variety to more modern designs — and are made by local merchants.

What kinds of lanterns will I find in Yuen Long?

The vendors at Lantern Market sell traditional white rabbits on wheels and accordion lanterns with Chinese designs, but the more popular ones are sequinned goldfish, cellophane aeroplanes, and animals like elephants, whales, owls, and dinosaurs. The market operates from 6am-8pm every day, but the lantern stalls may open a bit later. Since this spot is popular for Instagram reels and pics, we recommend going on a weekday, preferably during the first half of the day.

hong kong lantern street tai kiu market

The lanterns cost anything from HK$60-HK$120, depending on the material they’re made of and how long they take to create. For instance, cellophane lanterns take longer to make as the material is more fragile and needs to be handled with care. Traditionally, people used candles to light their lanterns, but now they buy LED lights (HK$5 each) as they’re safer.

How do I get to Lantern Street?

Take the Tuen Ma Line to the Long Ping MTR Station (Exit D), from where the market a 6-minute walk via Yuen Long On Ning Road. You can also take the Light Rail to Hong Lok Road (Routes 761P, 615, 610 and 614) in Yuen Long, from where it’s a 3-minute-walk. Depending on when you go, the entrance can be hard to find, so keep your eyes peeled for lantern displays adorning a doorway on Kiu Tak Path. Head into the market and walk past seafood and vegetable stalls until you see the kaleidoscopic lantern displays.

At the same time, the Clipper is fully equipped with state-of-the-art sustainable shippings systems of today. The world tour began in Belgium, and the ship is currently heading to Hong Kong from Shanghai. Once the Hong Kong leg of the tour is done, the Clipper will depart to Indonesia.

Before it opens to the public in Hong Kong, the Clipper will be docked at Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui to host a series of private events from June 23-27. The ship can be booked for corporate events for 60–200 guests, depending on whether it is a sit-down occasion, dinner buffet, or reception. Guests can even book stays on board for a luxury cruise or an adventurous sailing trip, during which they will have access to 14 luxury cabins, a spacious dining room for dinners and presentations, and an outdoor bar.

Hong Kong’s First Indoor Surfing Venue Opens At Airside Mall https://thehkhub.com/hong-kongs-first-indoor-surfing-venue-opens-at-airside-mall/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 06:23:19 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=60913 Hong Kong got its first indoor surfing spot when Groundswell at Airside mall in Kai Tak opened earlier this month. The venue spread across 14,000 square feet has the city’s first FlowRider — a wave machine that simulates surfing conditions in a safe and controlled environment — so that anyone from grommets to seasoned surfers can practise their technique.

Visitors can book 60-minute open sessions any day of the week at HK$500, and get training from a professional surf coach, as well as access to equipment, towels, changing rooms, locker, and showers. Anyone who pays HK$1,500 and above and signs up for a membership will get additional benefits.

The Flowrider simulates a safe surfing environment, and overlooks the restaurant and bar area at Groundswell.

Try a spot of flowboarding — a water sport that combines surfing, skateboarding, wakeboarding, snowboarding, and bodyboarding. Remember that there are height restrictions, depending on the way you surf. Visitors who skateboard surf should be over 107 cm tall, while those who take part in stand-up surfing activities should be taller than 120 cm.

If you’ve worked up an appetite after all that surfing, you can order from Groundswell’s surfing island-themed bar and restaurant helmed by Michelin-nominated chef Heri Raharjo that serves Southeast Asian cuisine favourites such as Larb Gai Salad, Durian Shakes, Ikan Bakar, and Seafood Nasi Goreng.

Airside is one of the newer entrants on Hong Kong’s retail therapy scene, having opened in September 2023. The mall is built on the site of the historic Kai Tak Airport and housed in a 47-storey multi-complex spanning 700,000 square feet. It has around 40 restaurants, a 900-seat movie theatre, and a flight experience zone, as well as a rooftop garden, an amphitheatre, and urban farms.

This phase completes the Island North promenade that connects Kennedy Town and Fortress Hill over a nine-kilometre-long stretch, making it the city’s longest harbourside walkway.

The highlight of the latest phase of the precinct are the two MTR train cars that previously ran on the East Rail Line. These cars, known as Fly Head trains, still have some of their original features, which visitors can see when they walk into them via the new ‘Harbour Station’. A section of one of the cars was converted into multi-purpose spaces for community activities like workshops and exhibitions.

Other features of the precinct include a stepped train platform, a viewing deck, and a circular multipurpose square from which visitors can get panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. The venue also has a railway-themed Christmas decorations, complete with an illuminated tree, corridor, and platform. The Fly Head trains are open from 10am-10pm, while visitors can enter the other facilities of the precinct 24/7. The precinct is a pet-friendly space where visitors can bring their pets on leashes.

The government opened the Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in phases, starting in 2020. Over the past three years, various facilities have been unveiled to the public, such as the first harbour steps at Victoria Harbour at which the public can rent paddle boats, the themed harbourfront space called HarbourChill, and a floating restaurant.

Earlier this year, the government unveiled new harbourfront recreational spaces in Kowloon: the Cha Kwo Ling Promenade and the Tsui Ping Seaside, as well as the Cheung Sha Wan Promenade. Authorities plan to create more such spaces and eventually complete a 34-kilometre promenade by 2028.
