Hong Kong Ranks 9th Busiest International Airport in 2024 https://thehkhub.com/hong-kong-ranks-9th-busiest-international-airport-in-2024/ Thu, 01 May 2025 03:42:24 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67438 Hong Kong International Airport has made a strong comeback in 2024, securing the 9th spot among the world’s busiest international airports according to OAG, a global travel data provider. The airport saw a 40% increase in international airline capacity compared to 2023, showing a major rebound in global connectivity. This rise also comes alongside passenger traffic returning to pre-pandemic levels with 5.28 million travellers passing through in January alone, HKIA reported back in February.

What are the busiest international airports in 2024?

The rankings are based on international airline capacity, meaning the number of seats airlines scheduled on international routes for the entire year. This capacity is calculated using scheduled one-way flights, offering a clearer view of how much international traffic an airport can handle.

top 10 busiest international airports in 2024
Busiest international airports in 2024 (oag.com)

To put this year’s numbers into perspective, the data compares capacity with 2019 and 2023, showing how airports are recovering or growing beyond pre-pandemic levels, and here is the top 10:

While the rankings highlight international airport capacities, they are based on the number of seats scheduled on international flights, not the number of passengers who actually flew. This means the figures represent the airport’s potential traffic rather than confirmed traveller that have actually landed in the SAR.

More international connections from Hong Kong airlines coming this year

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has maintained its spot as the world’s busiest international airport in 2024, with 60.2 million scheduled seats, continuing its leading position since 2019. London Heathrow (LHR) followed in second place, offering 48.4 million seats, a 4% rise compared to the previous year. Incheon International Airport (ICN) climbed four places to secure third, thanks to a 24% increase in capacity from 2023.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) made an impressive recovery, posting a 40% jump in capacity from 2023 and securing 9th place, though still operating 23% below its 2019 figures, according to OAG. This might suggest the airport has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic capacity, despite showing stronger growth than many other airports.

With more international routes reopening, and Cathay Pacific and HK Express expanding their international network to 100 routes by the end of 2025, Hong Kong International Airport’s role as a key hub is set to strengthen. HK Express is also launching new flights to China, Korea, and Japan in May and June, adding even more connections across Asia.

Earlier this year, HKIA also ranked as one of the world’s top 10 airports in 2025. In another news, travellers should also be aware of the upcoming increase in departure tax this October, the first rise in over 20 years.

Hong Kong to Hold a Drone Show Over Victoria Harbour on May 1 https://thehkhub.com/hong-kong-to-hold-a-drone-show-over-victoria-harbour-on-may-1/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 23:50:17 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67403 Hong Kong will celebrate Labour Day, Tin Hau Festival, Tam Kung Festival and Cheung Chau Bun Festival in one go with a special drone show over Victoria Harbour on 1 May. The event, which will take place at the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade, will bring the city’s cultural stories to life with lights, music and festive scenes, creating a colourful atmosphere along the waterfront.

Visitors can expect a twelve-minute performance featuring hundreds of drones creating shapes and patterns linked to the traditional Chinese festivals celebrated in Hong Kong. Last year’s displays included famous scenes like the towering bun structures of Cheung Chau, and this year promises even more unique effects and melodies.

On top of the drone show organised over Victoria Harbour, another drone show will take place on 1 May at Gold Coast Piazza in Tuen Mun. Part of the Gold Coast Hydrangea Festival, this event will feature a 1,288-drone performance set against a backdrop of flower-themed celebrations. Visitors can enjoy immersive installations and a lively pop-up market, with many stalls supporting local creators and charities during the five-day festival.

Drone shows have become a key attraction for Hong Kong last years as several were organised to promote tourism and mark special occasions, including a popular Doraemon-themed show.

However, in March, the Hong Kong Tourism Board announced that from 2025, regular pyrotechnic and drone displays would be scaled back. Instead, the focus will shift towards rejuvenating harbourfront spaces and hosting more large-scale events across the city.

HKU Climbs Ten Places to Rank Among The World’s Top 20 Universities in 2025 https://thehkhub.com/hku-climbs-ten-places-to-rank-among-the-worlds-top-20-universities-in-2025/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 02:00:52 +0000 https://thehkhub.com/?p=67394 The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has made a major leap in the QS World University Rankings 2025, reaching 17th place globally. This marks the university’s highest-ever position, climbing ten places from 27th last year. The top of the list still includes academic giants like MIT, Imperial College London and Oxford, but Asia’s universities are steadily making their mark, as five of them now rank in the top 20.

Five Asian universities in the top 20

Out of 1,500 universities analysed for this ranking, The United States has the highest number of universities on the list, with 197 institutions ranked. The United Kingdom follows with 90, and mainland China has 71.

The top 20 universities in 2025 are:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads once again with a perfect score of 100, holding its position at the top for the 13th year in a row. Imperial College London moves into second place, while the University of Oxford ranks third. Harvard and the University of Cambridge complete the top five.

HKU now ranks 17th in the world, the highest ever for the university. It joins four other Asian institutions in the global top 20: the National University of Singapore (8th), Peking University (14th), Nanyang Technological University (15th), and Tsinghua University (20th). All five Asian universities improved or maintained their positions compared to last year.

The top 20 list includes seven universities from the United States, five from Europe (including four in the UK), and three from Australia. The University of Melbourne ranks highest among Australian universities, at number 13.

How the QS ranking is calculated

The QS World University Rankings are based on a weighted scoring system designed to reflect both academic strength and broader impact. Each university is assessed across key indicators including academic reputation (30 percent), employer reputation (15 percent), faculty-to-student ratio (10 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), and international student and staff ratios. Newer criteria like sustainability and graduate outcomes also contribute to the total score.

For instance, MIT earned a perfect score of 100 in this year’s survey while HKU received an overall score of 87.6, driven by standout performance in several key areas: International student ratio (99.3), Academic reputation (97.4) and Citations per faculty (86.4). These scores underline HKU’s strong global reputation, its appeal to international students, and its influence in research.

Hong Kong draws crowds with major events

The “Music of the Spheres” world tour has sparked huge excitement among fans in Hong Kong. Tickets sold out quickly, with many fans frustrated they couldn’t secure tickets despite trying several times. This high demand shows Coldplay’s enduring popularity and how much people are looking forward to their shows.

The Coldplay pop-up store and concerts come right after a series of major events in March, including the Rugby Sevens, Art Basel, and Art Central, all of which drew large crowds and international visitors to the city. Hong Kong has been buzzing with activity lately, with even more attention drawn by the recent 10-hour live stream from IShowSpeed, which attracted massive crowds across the city.

The store will be open from 11 AM to 9 PM, April 6 to 27, at G015, G/F, Airside.
